If You Can See It, You Can Be It! Connecting STEM Role Models with Youth

Funded by NASA as part of its Science Activation program, NASA Inspires Futures for Tomorrow’s Youth (NIFTY) connected NASA STEM role models with 50 youth-serving STEM programs for underrepresented youth (ages 9-14), with a critical focus on girls and other historically excluded genders in STEM. Girls and youth of color display high interest, confidence, and ability in STEM, but face multiple barriers including the intersectionality of racial, ethnic and gender stereotypes, low or no exposure to STEM role models, and low awareness of STEM fields and career pathways. Join us as we share the latest evidence-based strategies of gender-inclusive facilitation methods, explore hands-on STEM activities for middle school-aged youth, and hear from participating libraries about how to effectively work with role models to inspire youth!

Learning Objectives:

  • Define new evidence-based strategies for connecting with diverse learners with gender-inclusive approaches.
  • Incorporate Role Models into their library programs to benefit youth from historically excluded backgrounds in STEM.
  • Utilize free downloadable hands-on STEM activities for middle school aged youth.
  • Connect with other libraries that have successfully integrated Role Models in their youth STEM programs.
