Building off of the launch of adapted collections at last year's TLA, this session aims to continue to promote and educate on truly inclusive libraries for students with special needs, in particular those with severe medical and/or cognitive disabilities. The session will share with attendees inspiration and ideas on how to create the most inclusive and accessible library experience for all users. Special emphasis will be placed on adapted library book collections, an innovative collection conceptualized by the presenter. This program will share the ideas and information which will be included in the presenter's book which will be published by Bloomsbury Libraries Unlimited titled "Special Education in School Libraries: A Vision for a Radically Inclusive Library".
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will learn ways to make their libraries more inclusive and accessible to students with high physical and intellectual needs.
Upon completion, participants will understand what an adapted book is, the value of these collections for SPED students and how to create their own collection.
Upon completion, participants will receive ideas on how to collaborate with Special Education instructors to create programs and library lessons that best serve this special population.
